A new image for Penthouse as it sets it sights on an older audience – but one thing remains the same
She’s been the twinkle of the Daily Star, she was a prize exhibit in Zoo, and now Lauren Pope is Penthouse’s first ‘pet’ since its 2007 relaunch. And it may prove a good career move for the topless temptress –the raunchy rag has been relaunched with a more cultured audience in mind. Worldly, sophisticated and confident with his sexuality – meet the mantellectual.
But while the magazine may have been radically rebranded, Lauren certainly hasn’t. It’s a familiar façade for her. Her arms strewn suggestively across her breasts, inviting her captor to pin them down by her sides. Her lips perched in a prurient pout. Her bottom protruding towards the reader – her new owner.
But surely the scholarly urbane mantellectual will be repelled by Lauren’s easiness – her undiscriminating offer. We’re told he has confidence in his sexuality – is he not confident enough to buy a broadside without such licentious flesh on the cover? Although come to think of it, if he’s so sexually confident, what does he want with a magazine whose cover promises ‘8 ways to last longer in bed’?
Or is the magazine really aimed at the lad born before his time? A lonely bohemian who missed out on the liberation of all things lad. The man who spent his stag night in his local rather than with the prostitutes of Prague. The man who hung up his dancing-shoes long before the chain lapdancing clubs came to town. Who courted in the age when it wasn’t acceptance to buy your partner poledancing lessons for Valentine’s Day.
Such a ladult would have had a troublesome time of late. He’s too prudish for the top-shelf treats (although he’d been pressed to find much difference between their content and Penthouse’s) and feels out of rhythm with the teenage kicks of Nuts. But now thanks to Penthouse he can leer over Lauren in comfortable surroundings – in his own habitat.
Yes, peer into its page and Penthouse is exposed as familiar filth with a new camouflage. The same thrills, with different fills. For pornography is the tonic in these crude cocktails. Mix 40% pornography with splashes of Playstation and you’ve got a lads’ mag. While 40% pornography topped up with Sunday supplement makes the perfect treat for the mantellectual – serve on ice.
Smut is no longer the doting darling of the adolescent. Now new eyes scan the contours of Lauren’s body – a maiden voyage across tides of vulgarity. But if Lauren could see back from that gaudy gloss she’d see something familiar in those eyes: that same predatory focus, those same inhuman desires, that same emotional vacuum. Men are all the same, she might say. And she’d have a point. Swap gadgets for golf, trade 50 Cent for Forty Licks, and their magazines certainly look suspiciously similar.

Surely it's less worrying than such magazines are aimed at older men? they're old enough to know right from wrong, and to understand the real world is different. Sure, Penthouse isn't pleasant, but it's not as dangerous as you make out.
You're quite a writer! Kudos for keeping up with this story, points well made.
Awesome article mr Jackman :). Although you know I would take issue with the generalisations made about men... well written!
Alhough, I am not entirely sure what is more pornographic, the front cover, or your your more imaginative description of Lauren :P
Spot on as usual RJ - thank you for helping end the suffering of many women - a male voice in the world's female choir singing from the same hymn sheet - to use a corny metaphor.
"Or is the magazine really aimed at the lad born before his time? A lonely Bohemian who missed out on the liberation of all things lad. Pinned down absolutely correctly.
Also:
"But if Lauren could see back from that gaudy gloss she’d see something familiar in those eyes: that same predatory focus, those same inhuman desires, that same emotional vacuum. Men are all the same, she might say. And she’d have a point."
Men try to hide that predatory, emotion-less, inhuman look, and women try to avoid seeing it, but if you look, you will see it clear as day all over the place - if you open your eyes you can see the misogyny in men's eyes everywhere. Porn promotes emotion-less, predatory and inhuman feelings towards women. The world is going to kill itself with porn if this carries on.
There seems to be quite a lot of supposition in your psycho analysis!
I'm not sure why you'd think I'd object, but suffice to say I think that pornography is an inevitability (and not negative anyway) so laws that restrict it for adults are unnecessary
Men are all the same, she might say.
Yeah - she might say that. Or she just might say something like 'this modelling has made me richer that I ever dreamed...'
How can you feel sorry for a girl earning millions on the cover of one of the biggest selling adult mags?
"Men try to hide that predatory, emotion-less, inhuman look, and women try to avoid seeing it, but if you look, you will see it clear as day all over the place - if you open your eyes you can see the misogyny in men's eyes everywhere. - I don;t know whether to laugh or cry - besides what is 'inhuman', about sexual lust?
Surely with such a negative predatory description of men, that pornography must be justified in order to stem a mass raping spree.
"pornography is an inevitability (and not negative anyway) so laws that restrict it for adults are unnecessary" - So isn' war an inevitability? doesn't mean that the geneva convention shouldn't exist. Or murder? is that an inevitability? Death? - no point in the NHS, we're all going to die anyway! Dismissing something as inevitable does not mean that it should be condoned by the law. Many crimes or whatever are considered inevitable...
yawn, yawn, YAWN.
great piece robert.
they've definitely challenged the readers i guess by using such an unconventional looking pornstar for the first issue. mantellectual indeed.
all the fucking same.

the model made money but she made it by working in an industry which represents the wider view that men only want women for their sexual attractiveness - when men change their attitudes to women which is reinforced by porn, there will be no demand for this crap. What is this model going to do for money when discarded for the next one on the conveyor belt? She will no doubt have to sell her body. It happens all the time.
Thanks for this Robert you sure have the marketing of women’s bodies off to a tee. Yes, Penthouse has noticed a chink in the market - hardly a gap. Same tired old script aimed at the more mature and intellectual. They cannot see the irony in their own shallowness - or maybe ‘they’ can but they assume their readers are merely older lads mags readers. Funnily enough, this rarely seems to lead many men to conclude that - maybe - there is something wrong with porn itself. Like, there isn’t “bad porn “or “good porn” There is just-- porn. These publications may aim to seem contemporary, but in fact are operating from the same retrogressive rulebook. Let’s face it men’s magazines operate on a very superficial level. Life style buried under the same old - naked women - maybe to reassure the reader that he’s still the young stud or even that he is still heterosexual.
Just a few little snippets for general perusal - as I have worked in the sex industry for a few years now, I feel entitled to make some comments here.
I have been told I have rather a young girl's body. My most recent customer (and this was not requested beforehand or I would have said NO) ended up (didn't start out like it) "acting out" a paedo fantasy.
This guy had negotiated down the price, and when I arrived at his hotel room, noted 2 wodges of cash on the desk, one was for me obviously, and I am assuming that the other one was for another "escort" straight after me (he didn't have to make it so insultingly obvious that actually, he was trying to get 2-4-1)- but the paedo thing creeped me out big big time. I thought "is this what it's turning into?" I would get out of this "game" but I have no other options. (Won't go into that). I am sure that many customers have just imagined this (the paedo thing) in their heads in the past, but now, it looks like it's coming out into the open - and I assume there are many men out there who have this on their sexual fantasy list of "to-do's". (Men and their fucking sexual fantasy lists jesus).
Porn and it's emotion-lessness - As for the "gettting your girlfriend to do anal" issue which rears it’s ugly head more often now in porn (pardon the pun), I have never provided anal, will not provide anal ever, and I do not really know why these ignoramus's want anal - it's very painful for the female as a rule (oh,maybe she just needs to do it more often - duh), and as females do not have a prostate gland, they do not get the sensation that a man would have, having a finger or cock shoved up the ass. Regular (and even not so) anal sex fucks up the delicate tissues in the rectum. Women are, as a rule, smaller than men too, so it's more damaging for
I have a sort-of boyfriend, and the other nite he said , "I want to fuck you up the ass - hahahahah" - I shut him up by saying "if you want gay sex, go see your boyfriend". (I am not rubbishing gay men, just making a point).
Back to the paedo thing - porn is doing this to men's heads - make no mistake - creating more and more demand for anal and other sexual atrocities I won't mention and trying to coerce women into performing them. And btw - By porn, I mean the whole spectrum - nuts, fhm -in fact, these eye-level mags are the worst of all - it's not enough that you can get all this shit online - it has to be out in reality too just to make extra sure women see it in case they don't come across it online.
As for “sexual lust” being inhuman, sexual lust, inspired by the emotion-lessness of porn, is inhuman yes.
Men really need to sort their fucked-up-by-porn attitude to women. And yes, it fucks up women too – they bear the sad brunt of it’s effects
Fanny blood, if that is your real name.... I had something to say but am too challenged to remember.
Yours sincerely
Penis juice
Dear penis juice - too challenged - no doubt too mentally challenged - not too difficult - after all, you're only used to pics and images not words eh?
The penis juice had to be induced by viagra no doubt.
Good commentary, Robert, always happy to see another guy that "gets it" and isagainst the porn industry that is designed for his own enjoyment.
It is all the same, no matter how some try to justify it or "spin" it so that their product is less offensive or "better" than another guy's porn. The lad mags all follow the same formula, mixing naked or near-naked women, sports, gadgets, electronics, and a movie or two. Let's face a simple reality: the new Penthouse is trying to take a page from Playboy and position itself as a sophisticated mag that will compete with that publication instead of the more hardcore titles or the lads' mags. It may win over some of the 40+ crowd, but it is still getting by on degrading women and using them purely for their bodies to promote an image of what women "should" look like and what men "should" want. The dehumanization factor of this, like in any porn mag, has serious negative consequences for both men and women; the latter is obvious, but only a small segment of the male population actually gets the harm done to men when they consume this type of magazine.
Good article Robert, and when I get around to updating my blogroll again you will be on it as well.
Gavin, such fatalism has an eerie echo to apathy. Pornography is no more "inevitable" than your favourite footballer bolting to another team because they offer him a higher paycheque. It is a consequence of decisions made with an eye towards making money, it is not in the same category as death and taxes.
The reason that many men see pornography's continued existence as "inevitable" is due to a combination of things, one of which is a lack of empathy for the women involved. Male attitudes towards prostituted women are overwhelmingly negative and uninformed, and that influences their view and allows them to continue to demand more to satiate their own (culturally created) desires. When male attitude is informed and empathy exists, it is much more difficult to not only acquiesce in pornography's existence but also be so blithe about it.
You said blogroll - I assume you mean bogroll... And by that logic your first sentences does not, in fact, read like "Good commentary, Robert, always happy to see another guy that "gets it" and isagainst the porn industry that is designed for his own enjoyment."
but in fact read like
Pud commentary Sherbert, always snappy poo be another gay matt 'takes it' (in the bum) sand is a gangster, the born supremacy shat on his own farther.' - Seriously rgm, thats just stupid - post something relevant or dont bother posting at all!
So says the guy that said exactly nothing relevant in his childish response. What are you, 12?
Excellent analysis! And you are a good writer. I particularly like the word 'ladult', very fitting.
I like the way you acknowlege the conection between lads mags and the normalisation of the sex industry, cos it's all part of the same culture, that being raunch culture.
I find it insidious, this move to rebrand porn as more sophisticated and palletable, because one intention through this is to deny that their magazine is porn. Then we have the situation where it is acceptable for shops to sell unacknowledged porn mags on full view, and people saying the women posing in them are 'empowered'. Money does not make a person empowered, when it comes from the hand that oppresses you.
I also like when you say confident men wouldn't need to have advice about how to score more in bed. If men truely felt more secure about themsleves, they wouldn't feel the need to control women into pandering to male dominance through sexual objectification.
here, here, charlie.
here, here, RGM, aswell!

As a poet, I very much enjoyed my walk through your blog...as an avid reader, I think I enjoyed it even more. Time well spent...
Yes rape is horrible, though men can be the victims too, be that by a man or a woman. However on the wider world horizon one should not prioritise the implications of porn and rape when millions of females around the world are forced into circumcision and subjugated by the Saudi regime. How about in China where women are only allowed one child - is this not a suppression of a women's right to reproduce?
Why are women's feet smaller than men's?
...so they can get closer to the sink!
p.s I am sitting next to a woman now and she stinks!
This is a spot on post - it's just the same stuff repackaged in the hope of more profit to be gained with a supposedly 'wider' audience.
Its really hard to walk past racks of this crap at eye level when you're in a shop doing everyday shopping for a pint or something. Its like a painful reminder about how far we yet have to go for women to be seen as human beings.
And its great to find a man blogging about these issues, keep it up :)
Breakfast with Penthouse
OBJECT is being interviewed opposite Penthouse Tues 22/1 at 8 AM, BBC Radio Manchester (95.1 FM). Tune in for moral support (!) sadly there is no phone in.
Thanks Robert for excellent piece on Penthouse (we have not had the good fortune of seeing the latest Penthouse relaunch effort, so this has been particularly helpful !).
Best wishes
